Monologue at the end of the film Call me by the name of the actor Mikhail Stulbarg – one of the sharpest scenes in the film. Michael’s character happens to have a sincere conversation with his 17-year-old son about his alleged affair with another man. He says: But to feel nothing, to feel nothing – what a waste!
Call Me By Your Name has been nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for 21-year-old Timothée Chalamet. He won an Oscar for best screenplay editing. It was one of the most critical commercial successes of 2017. Unfortunately, it also has a disrespectful difference – the lack of theatre performance in India regarding the LGBTQIA+ theme. The studio decided not to release the film here.
The studio decided not to release award-winning films like Call Me by Name, Love, Simon and Lovers in India because of their LGBTQIA+ themes.
I asked why this decision was made. There were no controversial scenes or rudeness. It was a simple love story based on Andre Asiman’s book. Eventually I saw the film on Apple TV and was shocked by the story, the cinematography, the acting and the soundtrack. It reminded me of the classic French song Plaisir d’amour: The joy of love is only a moment, the pain of love lasts a lifetime.
Love of the wardrobe
In May of the same year the small LGBTQIA+ film Love, Simon, was shot in the United States. This is the story of a teenager who gets in touch with another boy by e-mail. I was looking forward to his release, I’m sure he won’t suffer the same fate as calling my name. To my great regret, this film was not considered suitable for publication in India either. She received eight awards and 24 nominations, including those from Humanitarian Aid and Teenage Choice, but her theme of self-realization, teenage fear and the struggle to grow up with or without sexual ambiguity seemed too big for India.
Wounded by this tendency, I was transported in 1996, when Dypa Mehta’s film Fire provoked such strong protests that it had to be banned. The sensitive images of the brilliant Shaban Azmi and Nandita Das of two women who have been abandoned by their husbands and who have found love and comfort in each other have not had much success in our patriarchal society.
But it was 1996 and it was 2017. Nothing has changed in two decades. Art is a reflection of society and we were clearly unwilling to accept the diversity of humanity offered by the gods.
Rejection of homosexuals
The amazing and long-awaited silver line arrived on the 6th. This was the case in September 2018, when a constitutional commission of five Supreme Court judges unanimously decriminalised part of the 158-year-old colonial law under Article 377 of the ICC. Judge Indu Malhotra stated that consensual sex is not an abnormality, but a variation.
After this historic decision, so much joy has arisen that the mood seems to change and freedom of expression in the arts and media seems to increase.
In 2019, another Hollywood film received critical and commercial recognition. Olivia Coleman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weish direct the cast of The Favourite, a film about the intimate relationship between the fragile Queen Anne and her two ladies in line. The film received ten Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and Olivia Coleman won her first Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role. In total it received 177 victories and 316 prize nominations.
Despite the decriminalization of section 377, the studio decided not to broadcast it in India because of the LQBTQIA+ theme.
The Bollywood release of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga in 2019 looked promising, but did not stimulate discussion about himself. It also seems to have avoided declaring itself and becoming known as the first mainstream LGBTQIA+ film in India.

But in the drama Netflix Made in Heaven by Zoe Akhtar, who was gay as a heroine for no reason. He had an incredible character, and he turned out to be a faggot. Finally, it seems that filmmakers are concerned about the representation of strong characters in Indian cinema, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Last month, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, one of India’s most talented actors, Ayushman Kurrana. It remains to be seen whether the sexual characters in this film will be accepted by the public. Whether we’re finished or we have to wait longer to hear those words on a celluloid: I’m just a boy for a boy and I want him to love her!
